Searching for the ultimate Father’s Day gift for the dad who loves golf? We’ve got exactly what you’re looking for! Arthurdale Heritage, Inc. is auctioning off two pairs of grounds passes to the 4^th Annual Greenbrier Classic, held July 1-7, 2013 in White Sulfur Springs, WV.

You and a friend could enjoy seven days of watching the world’s top golfers compete on the Old White Course at the historic Greenbrier. For the past two years the tournament has ended in sudden death playoffs, so the 2013 competition is sure to be fierce.

The passes are a $318 value, and guarantee admission to all practice and competition rounds. They also include tickets to the concert series featuring performances by Kenny Chesney and Aerosmith.

The online auction is open from now until Friday, June 14 at noon. The winners will be announced later that day. The two highest bids will receive two passes each to the Greenbrier Classic. You can place bids here, and you can rebid at any time, so check back to see if you’ve been outbid.

On June 22, AHI will host “Common Threads”, a show that will celebrate the history of hand-weaving and other fabric and fiber crafts in Arthurdale. Local artists will demonstrate their craft, teach classes, network, and swap supplies.

A special exhibit, “Weaving Legacies: Arthurdale’s Handweavers and the Craft Revival” will highlight the links between Arthurdale’s weaving program and broader national trends in the 1930’s.

The celebration of this new exhibit will include presentations by Sarah Fletcher (daughter of master weaver and Arthurdale homesteader Dorothy Thompson) and Philis Alvic, an eastern Kentucky weaver whose book, Weavers of the Southern Highlands, explores historic weaving programs in Appalachia.

The day begins at 10:00 with classes and demonstrations. These include a knit-in with Tracy Struther, quilting show by the Homestead Quilters Guild, weaving exhibits, plus spinning and dyeing demonstrations. For children, there will be tie dye and macramé workshops. A “scrap swap” will allow fiber artists to trade materials and supplies. At 11:30, Sarah Fletcher will speak and show samples of her mother’s work. A light lunch will follow, and the event will end with Philis Alvic’s discussion and book signing.

The Annual Raffle Dinner (an elimination dinner) is April 20 at the Masontown VFD. Tickets are $35, which admits one for dinner and a chance to win up to $1000. Additional “dinner-only” tickets are $15. Contact the office or purchase your tickets online.

Doors open at 5 pm. Dinner is at 6 pm with prize drawings to follow.

Museum & Craft Shop Opening Weekend

The weekend of May 4 also marks the beginning of the summer tourist season, which means the New Deal Homestead Museum and Craft Shop will be open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Brush up on your Arthurdale history with a museum tour and check out the beautiful handmade crafts made by West Virginia artisans in the Craft Shop.

Admission includes catered dinner, access to numerous raffles, prizes and a chance to win $1000!
