Arthurdale Heritage, Inc.
Original homesteaders of Arthurdale, by their very nature, are a part of the history of the first New Deal Homestead project in the United States. These 150 families are a unique group in the genealogy world. There are many such groups, one of the largest being the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Another unique group of families is The Mayflower Descendants. Perhaps the Arthurdale Descendants group is not quite as well known in the world as others, but it is no less unique. |
We, at AHI, have two very important reasons for needing to track these descendants. AHI bylaws require that at least one third of our 24 member board of directors be composed of descendants of original settlers. In 1985, when AHI was founded, the board recognized the importance of keeping these original families active in the community and the organization. They provide perspective on the history of the locale and a direct connection to the founding of Arthurdale. |
Secondly, AHI, through the generosity of Manford B. Weaver, has offered a full tuition and fees scholarship to an original homesteader descendant attending a WV public college or university. Mr. Weaver designed this scholarship to give Arthurdale youths an opportunity for a quality education, similar in theory to the opportunity he received as a result of his family moving to Arthurdale as part of the project. With the creation of the "Promise Scholarship" by West Virginia's Governor, Bob Wise, the financial need for Mr. Weaver's scholarship has been significantly reduced, and he has, therefore, ceased offering it effective with the 2003-2004 school year. We, and the past recipients, thank him for his generosity over the years. |
