Leon Trotsky is exiled to Mexico. King George V of England dies, is succeeded by his son, Edward VIII, who soon abdicates the throne to marry an American-born divorcée, Wallis Warfield Simpson. He is succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. Spanish civil war begins. Hundreds of Americans join the Lincoln Brigades. (Franco's fascist forces defeat Loyalist forces by 1939, when Madrid falls.) War between China and Japan begins, to continue through World War II. Yankees defeat Giants in 5th game of World Series. Japan and Germany sign anti-Comintern pact; joined by Italy in 1937.Soviet strongman Joseph Stalin launches his first mass terror after assassination of rival Sergei Kirov by arresting and executing millions. Virgin Islands become US Territory. Hundreds of thousands of midwestern farmers leave their land, destroyed by persistant dust storms. Many "Okie" or "Arkies" head to California. U.S. track superstar Jesse Owens, an African-American, captures four gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, ridiculing Adolf Hitler's theory of Aryan racial superiority. FDR defeats Landon for President in a landslide victory.
