Amelia Earhart is first woman to fly Atlantic solo. Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr. kidnapped and murdered.  Mohandas Gandhi vows to "fast unto death" for self-rule in India. The movie, "I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang", Mervyn LeRoy's disturbing indictment of the penal system in which an innocent World War I veteran is convicted of a crime and forced to spend time on the brutal chain gang, opens. Kodak introduces 8 mm film for home movies. The "Times" of London uses its new Times Roman typeface. Oscars went to  "Grand Hotel" for best picture, Fredric March in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for best actor, Helen Hayes in "The Sin of Madelon Claudet" for best actress, and to Frank Borzage for directing "Bad Girl". A Special Oscar was awarded to Walt Disney in 1932 for creating Mickey Mouse in 1928. Johnny Weissmuller stars in "Tarzan." New York Yankees sweep World Series 4-0. Unemployment reaches 13,000,000 by the end of the year. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is dedicated in Arlington National Cemetery. Actress Angie Dickinson was born. FDR elected by a landslide. Postage stamps cost $.03, gas $.10 per gallon, average annual income is $1,472.00

Adolf Hitler, swept into power on a tidal wave of German misery and anger, becomes chancellor of Germany and almost immediately gives himself dictatorial powers. Reichstag fire in Berlin; Nazi terror begins.  The screaming Faye Ray is powerless before the might of King Kong, a big hit at the movies. Giuseppe Zangara executed for attempted assassination of President-elect Roosevelt during which Chicago Mayor Cermak is fatally shot. Franklin Delano Roosevelt inaugurated as our 32nd President (“the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself”), FDR launches New Deal. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are first paired in Flying Down to Rio and go on to become the first couple of American dance.  Chicago World's Fair-"A Century of Progress" opens May 27, 1933 - October 31, 1934 visited by over 39 million, covered 47.4 acres.  USSR recognized by U.S. First concrete for Hoover Dam is put in place June 6. "Gold Diggers of 1933," directed by Mervyn LeRoy, was a musical comedy about a Broadway show based on the Great Depression. Construction began on the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. Best Picture: "Cavalcade", best actor: Charles Laughton in "The Private Life of Henry VIII", best actress: Katherine Hepburn in "Morning Glory", best director: Frank Lloyd for "Cavalcade". Monopoly is created in NJ by Charles B. Darrow, then  offered to Parker Brothers and REJECTED. When Utah becomes the 36th state to ratify it, the 21st amendment, repealing prohibition (18th amendment), goes into effect. Comedian Tim Conway was born. Albert Einstein immigrated to the United States in 1933 and became a professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton University. Postage stamps cost $.03, gas $.10 per gallon, average annual income is $1,487.00
